Sixth Grade Language Arts Overview
Reading
Close reading to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence to support conclusions drawn from the text. Determining central ideas or themes and analyze their development and summarize key supporting details or ideas. Analyze how word choices affect meaning: literal and figurative, point of view, etc. Students will be reading class novels as well as independently chosen novels.
Writing
Write persuasive arguments to support claims using valid reasons and relevant and sufficient evidence. Write informative explanatory pieces to convey complex ideas through effective organization/sequence that are appropriate to the audience at hand. Develop writing by planning, revising, editing, and rewriting or trying new approaches. Research projects and write ups to demonstrate understanding.
Language
Demonstrate command of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking using proper conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling). Determine or clarify meaning of unknown words or phrases. Speaking: prepare, participate, and present effectively in a range of conversation and collaboration with diverse partners building on other’s ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
